  Race Cranks vs. NoBoss Cranks

The only difference between Profile Race Cranks and Profile NoBoss Cranks is the method of attatchment of your sprocket. Race Cranks use a sprocket bolt, and NoBoss uses the 48 splines on the bottom bracket spindle to mount a Spline Drive Sprocket or Spider. Otherwise, the crank arms are exactly the same- same tubing, same q-factor, same limited lifetime warranty. A complete set of NoBoss cranks and a Spline Drive Sprocket is going to be slightly lighter than a comparable set of Race Cranks with a similar sprocket.

With a Race Crank and a traditional bolt on Sprocket, the pedal power is transmitted to the chain via that sprocket bolt. With the NoBoss cranks, the entire sprocket is transmitting power through all 360 degrees on the 48 splines of the BB spindle, the same 48 splines that are used to locate the crank arms.

  • 175mm NoBoss Arms with CrMo 5 5/8" spindle, CrMo Crank Bolts, 25t Spline Drive Sprocket = 30.6oz (866g)
  • 175mm Race Crank Arms with CrMo 5 5/8" spindle, CrMo Crank Bolts, CrMo Sprocket Bolt, 25t Ripsaw Sprocket = 31.3oz (888g)

For BMX Freestyle, there are several advantages:

  • Weight Savings
  • Left Hand Drive and Right Hand Drive Compatible out of the box
  • Clean Styling

For BMX Race, in addition to the above:

  • Stronger, more secure power transmission due to entire sprocket/spider transfering power, rather than one bolt on drive side crank arm

For Fixed Gear, in addition to the above:

  • The back and forth motion due to braking and accelleration of a fixed drivetrain loosens the sprocket bolt almost continually on standard Race Cranks. Eventually, the sprocket is damaged. With NoBoss Cranks and a Spline Drive Sprocket, this problem is eliminated.

How To: Convert your Profile FIxed Hubs to True 3/8 Axles

The second video in Wade's how-to series details the process of converting your Profile Fixed hubs from the original 3/16 axles to the stronger, smoother True 3/8" axles.

  14mm Fixed Hubs?
We don't currently offer a 14mm axle for Profile Fixed Hubs. Any of the axles we currently manufacture will not fit the Fixed hubs, either front or rear. We're working on prototype 14mm axles, however, and should have them out to the team in the next couple of weeks. We'll let them ride them around for a month or two, and if all goes well, we'll have them for sale by Interbike in September.

  Bootleg 4 and Chad DeGroot

Chad DeGroot threw a peg on his commuter bike and then "popped right up into a hang five." James Covington was inside Mr. Bike and Board, came out and shot this photo...

FF4 and Bootleg Sessions v.4 trailer

Andrew Voegeli won the trick comp at Fixed Fight 4 this weekend. I believe that's 2 St. Pete trick comps in a row. Kid is dialed. Pic stolen from 66Fixed's Flickr, thanks Carol.

I wasn't there, so I don't know if Pete Young raced, but I've heard that not only did Pete race, but he won it, so he was defintely representing Profile, because he's on it. How he managed to marry that girl with his scary facial hair is beyond me, but more power to him...

I think Profile has managed to corner the market on Alley Cat talent in Florida. Great work, guys...

Burd Phillips just hipped me to the trailer for the new Bootleg Sessions DVD.

  Fixed Fight 4

The race is only 12 days away. A few things worth repeating...

  • - $5 (race entry and/or trick contest entry)
  • - All bikes welcome.
  • - No bag is needed to race.
  • - Registration starts at 1PM and the race starts at 3PM.
  • - Wear a helmet. Even better, if you wear a helmet on race day you'll get a ten second head start!
  • - There will be six checkpoints and two volunteers at each checkpoint. This will keep things moving quickly.
  • - The only task required at a checkpoint is that you stop to get credit for being there.

After-party Info...
I just confirmed yesterday that an after-AFTER-party has been set as well. This will take place at Fubar Downtown. 658 Central Avenue St. Petersburg (minutes away from Cafe Bohemia). Huge list of bands and drink specials all night. If you pay for Fixed Fight you'll get in for free. Just keep your wristbands on from the race. Doors will open there at 7PM.

There you go. You have a full day on the 24th. See you ALL there.

  26

"Twenty six inch fixed gear" doesn't have quite the same ring to it that "700CMX" does, but the smaller wheels offer some options that you just can't get otherwise. For one thing, a world of super-stiff downhill and all mountain style rims, such as the Sun MTX series, as well as a lower center of gravity, more toe clearance, shorter spokes, and a wider selection of wide tires.

Tony Fast was interested in trying out 26, so I sent him a couple of Sun rims and some purple prototype "Smooth Bore" Fixed hubs I had lying around waiting for a project. He's pretty stoked on it. You can read all about it, and see a lot more pics over at the Bicycle Revolution (Philadelphia) blog.

Pic stolen from Bicycle Revolution. Thanks!

The "Smooth Bore" (I just made the name up a few minutes ago, it's by no means the final production name) Hubs are prototypes that we made up, and are a hint at what the 2011 Fixed hubs will look like. More changes are being looked at, including drilled flanges and revised or laser etched logos. I would like to look into an ultra light track racing hub, as well as 14mm rear axles. Pegs?

The new hubs will not be available until Interbike in September at the soonest- we have too much other product in the pipeline at the moment.

  Tom in England

This has been all over the internets already, but in the off chance that you missed it, here's a vid of Tom and Tony's recent trip to the UK. Really good stuff.
